Las Vegas is well-known as a city of excess and indulgence, a place where people can forget their troubles and let loose. The bright lights and constant entertainment are a draw for many, but for some survivors of the October 1 massacre, the allure of Sin City has faded.

Almost two months after the Route 91 Harvest music festival shooting, which left 58 people dead and over 500 injured, many survivors are struggling to make ends meet. Many lost their jobs in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, and those who have been able to find new employment often earn less than they did before.

For some survivors, Las Vegas was not only a place of tragedy but also of financial loss. Several survivors told CNN that they had gambled in the days leading up to the shooting, and lost significant sums of money in the casino machines. MGM Resorts International, which owns the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino from which the gunman opened fire on concertgoers, has offered to reimburse these gamblers, but so far only a handful have applied for reimbursement.

Others have chosen not to seek reimbursement because they feel guilty or ashamed about having gambled in the first place. "I don't want their money," said one survivor. "I'm not going to take their dirty money."

In light of these difficulties, many survivors say they are now trying to stay away from Las Vegas altogether. "It's just not worth it," said one survivor. "There's too much sadness here."
